船魂神社

融通念仏宗を広めるため、良忍という高僧がこの地に来て、「ここは観音菩薩の霊跡である。」といい、 保延元年(1135年)観音堂を建てたのがこの神社の始まりとされ、 北海道最古ともいわれているが明らかではない。 また、源義経が津軽から渡航したとき、遭難しそうになったところを船魂明神の加護で無事上陸したなどの伝説もあるが、 もともとは観音菩薩を祭る観音堂と呼ばれていたらしい。 江戸時代末期に船魂大明神と称し、明治12年(1879年)に村社になり、船魂神社と改称した。 明治25年(1892年)に改築された社殿は、同40年(1907年)の大火で消失した後、 一時、谷地頭町の函館八幡宮に神体を移していたが、昭和7年(1932年)この地に本殿を築いた。 現在の建物は、同37年に改築したものである。

The Funadama Shrine

The Funadama Shrine is said to have been originally built as Kannondo (the shrine dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy) in 1135 by a patriarch of Yuzu Nenbutsu Buddhism, Ryonin, who visited this place to spread his doctrine and noted that it was a holy place of Kannon. While the shrine is said to be the oldest one in Hokkaido, it has not been confirmed. There is another legend that Yoshitsune Minamoto was saved by the grace of Funadama Deity (the deity of ships) when his ship was in danger of being shipwrecked on the way from Tsugaru (in Aomori Prefecture). The shrine once called Kannondo was designated as Funadama Gracious Deity at the end of the E 1879 it became a village shrine and was renamed Funadama Shrine. As the shrine building, previously rebuilt in 1892, was burnt down by a disastrous fire in 1907, the contents of the shrine were temporarily moved to the Hakodate Hachiman Shrine in Yachigashira ward. In 1932 the main shrine was constructed in this place.

鎌倉時代の建久年間、源義経主従は津軽の三厩からえぞ地へ渡ろうとした。 その時逆浪のため船が沈みそうになったが、どうにか船魂明神の加護により上陸することかできた。 ようやく辿り着いた一行は喉がかわき水を探していたところ、 こつ然と童子が岩の上に現われ指をさした,その方向を見るとこんこんと水が湧き出たという。 この岩を人びとは童子岩と呼ぶようになった、またその水を御宣託の泉といった。 また誤って洗濯水といわれたこともあったが今は泉の跡すらない。

蝦夷実地検考録によれば、文治の未(１１９０)義経津軽より渡り未る洋中に、 逆波起り船まさに沈もうとした時、船魂明神の奇せき有り、つつがなく岸に着き 此のあたりと、歩いている時、にわかに、咽が渇き水を探していると童子神が、 忽然と岩上に現れ、指す方をとみれば、清水こんこんと湧出ていた。 後世、御宣託の泉と言伝えた。
